To make a big sound you need a big drum like a bass drum. A bass drum is a big drum that generates low notes. Bass drums are generally struck with mallets or hit with a beaters that is attached to a pedal depending on the style of drum.
Bass drums tend to fall into one of three general categories. There are concert bass drums, kick drums and pitched bass drums. Like the name implies, the concert bass drum are used primarily in concert band or orchestral music. The kick drum is usually used in the kind of drum kits favored by rock and jazz musicians.
The pitched bass drum is usually played in conjunction with other drums. In some cases each drum is tuned to a certain pitch and note so each player contributes something unique to the ensemble. Pitched bass drums are usually seen in marching bands and drum corps.
