Computer Recording Music
Recording Your Own Music on Your Computer.
Music recording software for your computer is hot these days. Computer programs that record, edit, mix and master audio input from a microphone or directly from electronic instruments can turn any garage band noise into a studio quality album. Music recording software ranges in type from home studio software to audio editors to sequencers.
Many popular brands of computer programs for music recording are Ableton, Cakewalk, Fruity Loops, Propellerhead and Sony Acid Studio. Cakewalk makes program, Guitar Tracks Pro 3 (Windows) that’s designed specifically for guitarists (so no need to read any music! j/k).
If you’ve got a more diverse repertoire, spring for the Propellerhead Reason 3.0, which includes a plethora of synthesizers, samples, drum machine effects and a mixer! Hot!
Many digital audio editors make it possible for the user to record audio from multiple inputs, i.e. more than one instrument at a time, and then edit the start and stop times. The more advanced the program, the more options you have. Some computer programs allow the user to mix tracks, control the volumes and then play back. In the end, the audio may be saved in any audio file format, mp3, WAV or AU.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you start recording your own music on your computer:
* After you pick out a program, be sure to read all the instructions before starting. It’d be a shame if you improvise a killer guitar riff just to find out that you didn’t lay down the track properly. Bummer, dude.
* Back Back Back it up! Make sure you save your stuff. If you get a track perfect, save it to your hard drive, but put it on a disc too, as a data file.
* Don’t just use those crappy computer speakers that came with the Dell that your dad bought you in college. Get good speakers. How are you suppose to know what your tracks sound like if you can’t hear them?
* Add drums first. Then vocals. Then the Guitars. I know it sounds contradictory, but trust me.
* After you put the reverb in (less is more, dude), after you mix down your tracks to a single stereo track, then don’t forget to Audio Master. Add in all your rad effects and Presto!
You have your first track. Add a couple more, and you can say this classic line to all the ladies at the bar: “My band and I just cut our first EP. You wanna go back to my place and have a listen?”
