Music Keyboards
At the very basic level, a musical keyboard is simple a set of levers or keys on any musical instrument. By pressing a key, the instrument produces sound, mechanically or electrically. Simple. The keys of the piano are the most recognizable and often other instruments, like my favorite, the Accordion, mimic that layout of white keys for the natural notes of the C Major scale, and then the black notes, keys that represent either flats or sharps in other scales.
Typical Instruments with a keyboard include:
The Accordion or squeez box without the keyboard
The Keytar my personal favorite, its electric keyboard on a strap, like a guitar.
The Harpsichord an old relic, the keys actually pluck strings, like a harp.
The Piano upright, or grande style, little hammers strip wires. You probably knew that.
The Electronic Keyboard or digital piano, popularized in the 1970s these instruments are much more light weight and portable pianos with a synthesized piano-like sound.
The Synthesizer often reproduces a myriad of sounds, from flutes or violins to barking dogs.
The Pipe Organ the keys open valves that push air through pipes, used frequently in churches and by gothic villans.
The Electric Organ a space and money saving alternative to the pipe organ, not nearly as effective as intimidation, and therefore less popular with the super villans.
The Carillon tired of pulling ropes in the bell tower? A carillon controls the striking of bells with a keyboard.
