Tom Drums

Tom Drums

Long before tom tom drums were used by popular musicians to rock the house, tom tom drums were being used for communication purposes. The tom tom drum has been traced back to both Native American and Asian cultures. The evolution of this universally popular drum parallels major movements in music and engineering improvements in instrument design.

The tom drums featured in the original drum sets featured drum heads tacked to the shell of the drum with no rims. As more major manufacturers began to feature tom drums the designs became more sophisticated. Tuning lugs, hoops and legs for larger tom drums were added.

Drummer set ups using tom tom drums can consist of one or up to three tom drums. The dimensions of the drums can vary widely depending on the year it was manufactured and the style of the drum. Diameters for the drums can range anywhere from 6 to 20 inches, creating vastly different sound effects.
